Taylor Sheridan’s upcoming Yellowstone spinoff just added a Western acting veteran, giving him a replacement show for a canceled HBO
series. Taylor Sheridan’s TV shows have become the marquee attraction for Paramount+, a streaming service that was late to the streaming game.
These shows are regarded for bringing the best out of veteran actors, such as Kevin Costner and Harrison Ford. The Yellowstone franchise, in particular, is a major hit with multiple new shows in development. After Yellowstone’s 2024 ending, we’re expecting multiple spinoffs released in 2026.
Ed Harris has worked in the film industry for decades, allowing him to work on classic movies like The Truman Show and Apollo 13. Still, it was his role as the Man in Black on the HBO sci-fi Western series, Westworld, that brought him some of the most acclaim and popularity he’s had in his career.
He continued to play the Man in Black throughout Westworld, up until the show’s cancellation following 2022’s season 4. Despite consistently providing an engaging performance, as was the case with the rest of the sci-fi epic’s cast, Ed Harris couldn’t save the show from its declining reviews and popularity.
Ed Harris will have another mainstream TV opportunity with Taylor Sheridan’s The Dutton Ranch, a spinoff of the original Yellowstone show focused on the characters Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) and Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly). This series is in pre-production, but is bound to be a major hit upon its Paramount+ release.
Ed Harris is one of numerous veteran actors to join a Taylor Sheridan series, with Michelle Pfeiffer, Samuel L. Jackson, and Sam Elliott also set to appear in upcoming shows. Sheridan’s shows are known for creating unforgettable characters with all-star casts, arming actors with some of the best dialogue they’ve ever had.

Ed Harris’ Yellowstone Universe Role Will Be Very Different From Westworld
William, a.k.a. the Man in Black, sitting in a chair as his host version on Westworld.
When you think of Ed Harris in Westworld, words like menacing and sadistic come to mind. His character, the Man in Black, was an archetypal villain who, despite having fascinating layers of complexity and backstory, fulfilled the Devil archetype in the show’s world, particularly early on.
In The Dutton Ranch, the veteran actor is playing a character who’s described as compassionate, understanding, and with a good sense of humor. Not to mention, Ed Harris will surely win over the hearts of audiences as he’s playing a veterinarian who’s passionate about his animals. This will be a curious addition to the Yellowstone world.
