Chicago Fire’s Violet Mikami just can’t catch a break in love. After a turbulent few seasons, it seemed like romance with firefighter Sam Carver might finally give her a happy ending. But actress Hanako Greensmith has confirmed that Violet’s bliss will be short-lived.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Greensmith explained that Violet is entering a new stage in her life, one shaped by heartbreak and disappointment. “Violet has taken on so much heartbreak and frustration,” she said. “I feel as if I am witnessing her walk into a new phase where she’s learning to live with these disappointments differently.”
Rather than letting pain weigh her down, Violet is beginning to see it as part of her journey. Unfortunately for fans of “Viver,” Carver’s exit means her love life is headed into rough waters again.
Carver’s Goodbye
Season 13 ended with a long-awaited moment between Violet and Carver. The two shared a kiss and admitted they loved each other. But their romantic high was cut short by his revelation—he had applied for a job in Denver.
Behind the scenes, actor Jake Lockett had already confirmed that he would not be returning for season 14. Showrunner Andrea Newman described their final moment as bittersweet. “Do they get this moment and that’s all? Or do they get to explore past that?” she asked. Sadly, the answer seems clear.
Greensmith praised working with Lockett, calling it a “dream.” She admitted it was emotional to shoot their last scenes, knowing Violet would be left to pick up the pieces. “It was really wonderful to bring to life as much as possible and make it as heartfelt and honest as possible,” she said.
With Carver gone, Violet is stepping into what Greensmith playfully called “single girl season.” She hinted that Violet, along with her partner Lyla Novak, may be navigating a whole new dating pool. Both women ended last season with boy trouble, and both are likely starting fresh when the new season opens.
“I can’t give away too much,” Greensmith teased, “but it does seem as if Violet is in a new dating pool in a different way than she has been before.”
That doesn’t mean Violet will be rushing into a rebound. Instead, fans will see her growing into adulthood and learning how to live with heartbreak without letting it consume her. “A part of growing up is learning how to live with it as opposed to against it,” Greensmith explained.
A Time Jump Brings Answers
Season 14 will open with a small time jump, a choice Greensmith believes will benefit both the characters and the fans. “We’re going to be giving answers to a couple of the questions from last season pretty immediately,” she revealed. “No one should be left with too bated of a breath.”
That means viewers won’t have to wait long to learn how Violet is coping after Carver’s departure. The story will move forward quickly, setting the stage for her next chapter.
What Comes Next
For Violet, the loss of Carver isn’t just another breakup. It’s part of a larger journey about resilience, identity, and personal growth. Greensmith has promised that fans will see her character embrace strength even as she carries scars from her past.
Carver’s absence also leaves space for Violet to focus on herself and her career at Firehouse 51. And with Novak by her side, there’s plenty of potential for new storylines outside of romance.
Chicago Fire Returns
Chicago Fire season 14 premieres Wednesday, October 1, at 9 p.m. ET on NBC. It will be part of a full night of the One Chicago franchise, with Chicago Med returning at 8 p.m. ET and Chicago P.D. airing at 10 p.m. ET.
Violet may be walking into “single girl season,” but if Greensmith’s hints are anything to go by, her journey will be about much more than love. Fans should prepare for a season of heartbreak, healing, and growth as Firehouse 51 faces its next big chapter.
