The actor, who has appeared on Yellowstone as a young John Dutton in Seasons 1, 2, and 5, shared how he was filming his forthcoming miniseries Palm Royale and his Yellowstone Season 5 scenes at the same time. “What was striking about Palm Royale is that I was shooting [it] playing Douglas on the weekdays and flying on Friday night to Montana, slapping on a mustache and putting on basically Costner’s voice to play young John Dutton. It was like my weekend job,” he said. “And it was a crazy almost duality or bipolar reality because obviously John Dutton is a dark, powerful mysterious figure, and I’m basing it all on what Kevin has done, but I also think it’s a world that I would absolutely love to explore further.“

He added, “I can’t tell you how incredible being with those horses in that place with the history of where Taylor [Sheridan] goes with that show and those characters [was]. It’s one of my favorite jobs in my life.”

Yellowstone premiered on Paramount Network in June 2018, following the Dutton family, who are the owners of the largest ranch in Montana, Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. The fifth season, focusing on John Dutton preparing for political war as he takes office as the governor of Montana, aired its first eight episodes between November 2022 and January 2023. The second half of the season was supposed to begin airing over the summer of 2023, but production was indefinitely delayed due to scheduling conflicts with series lead Kevin Costner. At the time of writing, Paramount Network has not officially announced when the final six episodes of Yellowstone will be released, although a late 2024 premiere was being eyed back in November.

With Costner’s time playing John Dutton seemingly over, Sheridan is working on a new Yellowstone series for Paramount that will serve as a sequel to the main show. The sequel series will continue the present-day Yellowstone storyline, unlike the other spinoffs which are set in the past and focus on a different Dutton generation.
