Deep Dive – “Chicago Fire S14 Episode 1: Sal Vasquez Arrives & Firehouse 51 Rebuilds Itself”

The doors of Firehouse 51 are constantly revolving, and this past season of Chicago Fire was no different. We saw the mysterious, moody Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney) enter as the new captain. Characters like Carver (Jake Lockett) and Jack Damon (Michael Bradway) were popping in and out of shifts with personal and work matters, respectively. All season, Mouch (Christian Stolte) and Herrmann (David Eigenberg) wavered on whether they should take advancement tests and possibly leave their longtime work home. And, finally, Stella (Miranda Rae Mayo) and Severide (Taylor Kinney) are trying to bring a new (little) person into the station.

So it was no surprise that when Season 13 ended, we were left with questions about who may not be returning to the show. Thankfully, we don’t have to wait too much longer to see who walks through those doors because the crew of Firehouse 51 and Chicago Fire Season 14 will be back on our TVs before you know it.

To answer all your burning questions ahead of Chicago Fire Season 14, we’ve put together everything you need to know, including when it premieres, who will be in the new season — and who won’t — and where you can watch it.

Chicago Fire Season 14 cast changes

Daniel Kyri, who played Darren Ritter for seven seasons, is saying farewell. Deadline reported in April, ahead of the Season 13 finale, that Kryi and Jake Lockett (who plays Sam Carver) were leaving Chicago Fire. At the time, Kyri shared Deadline’s social media to his Instagram Story and added, “I’ll miss this character, and it’s time to move on.”

Fans assumed that was the last time we’d see Ritter and Carver, but on Aug. 4, Kyri shared a photo on his Instagram Story while shooting on the set of Chicago Fire, People reported.

Most recently, on Aug. 13, Kyri posted a photo to his Instagram with a lengthy caption explaining that he filmed his last scenes as Ritter in a final goodbye to the character.

Chicago Fire Season 14 release date

Chicago Fire Season 14 will premiere on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 9 p.m. ET/ PT on NBC. In addition to the firefighters, rescue squad, and paramedics of Firehouse 51, viewers will see the return of all One Chicago first responders that Wednesday. Chicago Med Season 11 will premiere at 8 p.m. ET/PT, and Chicago P.D. Season 13 will premiere at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Those with a Peacock subscription can watch Chicago Fire live online in most areas. The show can also be viewed on the streaming service the next day.

What will Chicago Fire Season 14 be about?

Chicago Fire Season 14 trailer has not yet been released, so we can only assume the season will pick up and address the open storylines from the Season 13 finale. Based on that, here’s what we anticipate seeing.

Ritter says goodbye. Based on the fact Kyri posted that he filmed scenes this August as Ritter, we anticipate his character’s storyline ending in the first episode or two.

Pascal finally embraces the team. All season, the new chief seemed to be at arm’s length with the crew at Firehouse 51. After Severide helped clear him of his wife’s murder, maybe he can finally look at this team like family.

Violet moves on. The Chief Paramedic was pining for Carver all season, and when she finally got the nerve to tell him, he said he’s moving to Denver. However, he showed up at her apartment and they ended Season 13 kissing. Because it’s already been announced that Lockett is leaving the series, it’s reasonable to assume he won’t be back for Season 14 — or at least more than an episode or two — and Violet will have to move on again.

Mouch takes over Engine. Herrmann was supposed to take the captain’s exam when Mouch took his lieutenant’s exam. He didn’t, and ultimately, he decides to step down so Mouch can become the Lieutenant of Engine 51. Season 14 will hopefully show us what Lieutenant Mouch looks like as a leader and what effect a demotion may have on Herrmann.

Stellaride has a baby. After months of trying to adopt, Stella learned she’s pregnant. She showed Kelly the positive test in the Season 13 finale. Hopefully, the next season will reveal she’s having a healthy pregnancy while being the best female firefighter in Chicago and having no complications whatsoever. When TV Guide spoke with showrunner Andrea Newman after the finale, she said the direction wasn’t decided yet, but “there are so many ways to go with that.” One Chicago shows historically do not have a great history with their lead characters and pregnancies, so keep your fingers crossed.

Although no characters died or officially exited the series at the end of Season 13, it was announced in April that Daniel Kyri, who plays Darren Ritter, and Jake Lockett, who plays Sam Carver, are leaving. Additionally, People confirmed in June that Michael Bradway, who plays Kelly’s brother Jack Damon, would also be leaving. (This may partly be due to the fact he was cast in a Prime Video series based on the novel Every Summer After by Carley Fortune.)

Those are the only departures we know of for now, but in May, Deadline reported that NBC was taking cost-cutting measures on One Chicago. “Other One Chicago departures are possible,” the report stated. Hopefully, it won’t impact any more of Firehouse 51, but here is who we are anticipating to see in Season 14 as of now.

Chicago Fire cast:

  • Taylor Kinney as Lieutenant Kelly Severide
  • David Eigenberg as Lieutenant Christopher Herrmann
  • Christian Stolte as Lieutenant Randall “Mouch” McHolland
  • Joe Minoso as Joe Cruz
  • Miranda Rae Mayo as Lieutenant Stella Kidd
  • Hanako Greensmith as Violet Mikami
  • Jocelyn Hudon as Paramedic Lizzie Novak
  • Dermot Mulroney as Battalion Chief Dominick “Dom” Pascal

Chicago Fire recurring cast:

  • Randy Flagler as Capp
  • Anthony Ferraris as Tony
  • Katelynn Shennett as Kylie Estevez
